BBQ Supplies

I brought my BBQ from the UK, it is a combination one with both a charcoal side and a gas side.

Needed to get suitable gas cylinders and regulator and after a bit of searching and asking a local furniture store who stock gas BBQ's, I headed out to track down the necessary bits.

The advice given was visit a WOQOD petrol station and they should have everything. The nearest outlet was about 3 km away, so jumped in the car and headed off. Located the station and it was packed. Managed to get through the queue and spotted the gas racks at the back of the station and parked next to them. Sure enough the sign showed the prices of the bits needed.

Walked into the store and up to the counter and asked the guy at the desk and sure enough they had cylinders, hose and regulators, but no hose clips.

Anyway, purchased a cylinder and regulator, and also some hose just in case!

A new gas cyclinder was priced at 365QAR (~65UKP) and it was 15QAR (~2.50UKP) for refills after that. This was for a 12Kg cyclinder. The regulator was 45QAR (~8UKP) and the hose for 8QAR (~1.50UKP) for a 2 metre length. The guy then came out and loaded the cylinder into the boot of the car.

Now these cylinders are not like the BBQ gas cylinders in the UK and are lightweight made of glass fibre and not steel, so was a bit dubious about these in the boot not secured. Anyway, headed back to drop these at the villa as wanted to limit the time these were in the car! When they started moving about and then the first big thump as I went over a speed hump it certainly made me think if they should have been put behind the passenger seat and wedged in. Not to worry, made it back in one piece.

Next up I headed over to Carrefour at Villaggio as I remembered when I was last in and looking around I spotted hose clips, so picked up a couple which were 6QAR (~1UKP)for pack of 2. Was heading out there anyway to get some more food in and a few other bits and bobs, so wasn't just for those.

Back to the villa checked the regulator that was on the BBQ and sure enough it was a different type. It had a hose clamp on it, so freed it off and removed the UK regulator, fitted the Qatar regulator and tightened things back up and all good. Connected the other end of the hose with the non-removable screwed fitting to the BBQ and nipped it up tight.

Connected the regulator to the cylinder, which was a simple push fit followed by valve turn to lock in place and open the cylinder and all was good.

Turning the BBQ gas on and clicking the ignitor button and off it went! The BBQ lives.

[TripAdvisor Contribution] The Square - Satisfying lunch

I was in the hotel for a 1-day course with work and lunch was provided. This was hosted in The Square which is as their website puts it is "Featuring four interactive kitchens specialising in six influential cuisines from Japan, China, India, Thailand, Europe and the Middle East,"

I selected a plateful of Roast Beef with truffle infused mashed potato and must say it was very good.

Staff pleasant, service good and no complaints.

[TripAdvisor Contribution] Il Teatro - Friday Brunch

The Four Seasons in Doha was playing host to Friday brunch this week for my family and some friends. This was my first visit for brunch here and was very happy with it all, as were the rest of them.

We (4 Adults, 3 kids) were sat in the Il Teatro restaurant which is the italian one at the hotel, but as part of the brunch you could also take a wander through to the PanAsian restaurant Nusantao and help yourselves to the choice of food through there. The kids also had the ability to pick up food from the Abrica Cafe which is between the two restaurants.

Staff were excellent, food was great.

Another feature of this hotel is the Tower in the grounds outside the restaurant door which is a kids play room. Upstairs in the tower had games consoles more suited for slightly older kids, and downstairs more for the younger ones.

After brunch was finished we headed out to the Pool Grill bar for some drinks where again the staff were very accommodating.

Overall an excellent day/evening.

Uber

This week with the family paying a visit, there was a need to simplify the methods of transport, particularly for Nadia who was venturing on a girls night out in Doha and I had to stay at the villa to look after the bairns, so wouldn't be able to go and pick her up at the end of the night. Then the following day getting to/from Friday brunch!

A few other had said they had used Uber which is operating in Doha, so thought I would give it a go.

First up was for Nadia to install the app on her phone, register an account and then I simply used my Qatar debit cards as the payment method.

I then also set up the app on my phone and registered / added payment methods.

It worked great. Especially the ability to text the driver with more detailed pickup location, e.g. enter compound, turn right, 2nd villa on right etc. etc.

I also really like the post trip email receipt you get with the route map etc.

There is also a promotion on at the moment in Doha, with 20% off rides over the summer, by simply adding the promotion code DOHASUMMERLOVE

They also run promotions* (like free first rides) based on invite codes, so if you haven't yet signed up you can use my invite code (click the link); uberQatarIsCalling

*Note: promotions have t&c's and subject to change at Uber's discretion

[TripAdvisor Contribution] Cafe Tasse - Quick bite to eat for lunch.

Popped down to the Souq for a spot of lunch and ended up in here.

Sat upstairs in one of the small rooms, the place was quiet and relaxed with some background music playing.

Food was pretty good with the kids having Margarita Pizzas (25QAR each), and the parents had a Chicken Salad (35 QAR) and a Tuna/Sweetcorn Pizza (38 QAR). To wash things down the kids had a couple of Sunshine fruit cocktails (19 QAR each) and the parents had 7up/Pepsi (4 QAR each).

Overall very happy with the food and service.

Fruit, fruit and more fruit.

Back in the UK I was never really a big fruit eater. Occasionally would have the odd Granny Smith apple or a handful of seedless grapes and maybe the odd tangerine.
It is maybe the fact that I have a fresh plate of fruit delivered to the office everyday, but for whatever reason I am certainly eating more fruit than ever before.

When it comes to food, I have never been that adventurous, but again here I have amazed myself.

On the fruit plate I had been provided with some "hairy balls" and also a small round hard thing with a green top. After a bit of enquiry with my friends on Facebook, the information as to what they were and how to eat them was provided.

The first one, the hairy balls, turned out to be Rambutan. Following the instructions I proceeded to split them open, pulled the fruit out and with a degree of intrepidation took a bite. Conclusion, it tastes just like a grape! Okay, the texture is a bit weird, but perfectly acceptable to me......this one is now on my official list of edible foods!
Rambutan
The next one is the Mangosteen. Tearing it open revealed the white segments of fruit inside. For some reason it reminded me of the film Aliens and the little aliens coming out of their cocoons! This one took a bit more effort, I ended up with juice everywhere and as for the taste, not quite sure how to describe this one. Think it will take another one at least to decide if it is a keeper or not!

Mangosteen - Fruit Segments

Mangosteen - Slimed me!

At least there is also a steady stream of more familiar fruit like grapes and green apples, but do wonder what else might turn up one day!
